JOHANNESBURG: Udette Luminance Interview

Luminance Collection interview - UDETTE

When was the last time you were professionally photographed, and why?

I have never been very comfortable being in front of a camera, and it hardly ever occurred to me to have photos of myself. The only time I used to think about having professional photographs done was when there was a special occasion in the family that we felt should be captured. These photos tend to be with the birth of my children, or celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday etc.

What motivated you to be part of the Luminance Collection?

The Luminance Collection was an initiative that resonated strongly with me. Looking at the photos Bridget did of other women over 40 convinced me that we can still celebrate our unique beauty, even though it’s not perhaps what mainstream media always celebrate as “beauty”.

The experience gave me a new appreciation of my mother’s unique beauty, which has helped define my views of beauty and my daughter's.

What inspires you now that you’re over 40?

Carl Jung said that life does begin at 40. Up until then, you are just doing research. Now that I’m in my 40s, I have learnt to trust the abundance that comes my way. My priorities are clear, and I enjoy dedicating my time and love to what is most important in my life. I’m inspired by positive, open-minded people who can learn and grow. I have stopped sweating the small stuff and instead started enjoying the beauty of small things such as the smile of one of my children, the smell of grass after the rain, a cold glass of wine enjoyed with a
