HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR BABY PHOTOSHOOT

Creating a Calm and Joyful Experience for You and Your Baby

A baby photoshoot is more than a session — it’s a celebration of your little one’s earliest days. Preparing well ensures the experience feels relaxed, comfortable, and filled with love, allowing your baby’s natural expressions and personality to shine.

1. What to Expect from the Experience

From the moment you arrive at my Johannesburg studio, everything is designed with your baby’s comfort in mind. Sessions are unhurried, allowing time for feeding, soothing, and gentle breaks. The goal is to create a peaceful environment where your baby feels secure — and where we can capture those spontaneous smiles, tiny yawns, and tender moments that make every image timeless.

I’ll guide you throughout — from lighting and posing to when we pause for cuddles — so you can relax and simply enjoy the moment. Patience and artistry come together to reveal the delicate details that define your baby’s earliest story.

2. What to Wear — Simplicity is Timeless

The most beautiful baby portraits are simple and pure. I recommend soft, neutral tones such as white, cream, grey, and beige that complement your baby’s delicate skin tones. Avoid busy patterns, text, or logos, as they can distract from the emotion and connection within the image.

Parents and siblings look best in coordinated, understated outfits. My signature black wardrobe option also photographs beautifully — it keeps the focus on faces and connection rather than clothing. Bare baby skin, swaddles, and simple wraps often create the most meaningful portraits.

3. How to Prepare Before the Session

A few thoughtful steps can make the session even smoother:

  • Feed your baby just before the session to help them settle contentedly.

  • Bring essentials such as extra nappies, wipes, and a favourite blanket or toy.

  • Dress your baby in loose clothing to avoid fabric marks on the skin before we begin.

  • Keep calm and relaxed — babies sense your energy, and your comfort helps them feel secure.

4. Trust the Process

Every session unfolds differently because every baby is unique. Whether your little one is sleepy, alert, or curious, I adapt the session to their rhythm. My experience since 2005 has taught me that the best images emerge from patience, intuition, and connection.

By the end of your baby photoshoot, you’ll have more than beautiful portraits — you’ll have a collection of heartfelt memories preserved as fine-art images to treasure for generations.
