Personal branding vs headshots

Personal branding vs headshots: what’s the difference?

Headshots and personal branding portraits are often grouped together.

They both serve professional purposes.
They both shape how you are seen.

But they are not the same.

The difference lies not only in how the images look, but in what they are designed to do.

What a headshot is for

A headshot is usually created to answer a specific need.

It is a clear, professional portrait used for:

  • LinkedIn
  • company websites
  • staff profiles
  • corporate communications
  • speaking profiles

In most cases, a headshot is a single image or a small set of closely related images.

Its role is straightforward: to present you clearly, credibly, and professionally.

What personal branding photography is for

Personal branding photography serves a broader purpose.

It is designed for professionals whose work depends on visibility across multiple platforms and contexts.

Instead of creating one clear portrait, it creates a body of work that supports how you are seen across:

  • websites
  • media features
  • articles and publications
  • speaking engagements
  • social platforms
  • brand and business materials

The aim is not just to show what you look like.

It is to communicate something more complete about your work, identity, and professional presence.

A difference in depth

A headshot is focused.

Personal branding photography allows for more depth.

That depth may come through variation in framing, expression, tone, wardrobe, or the overall visual language of the session. The images still need to feel coherent, but they are designed to work harder across a wider range of uses.

This is why personal branding photography is often the better fit for business owners, consultants, authors, speakers, and visible professionals whose public presence extends beyond one platform.

A difference in intention

The real difference is intention.

A headshot is often about recognition.

A personal branding portrait is about recognition with context.

Both need to feel credible.
Both need to be well-made.

But personal branding photography considers a wider question:

How should your work be understood when people encounter you online, in print, or in the wider public sphere?

Which one is right for you?

If you need a strong, professional portrait for LinkedIn, your website profile, or business use, a headshot may be exactly right.

If you need a more flexible set of images that can support your website, media presence, content, and broader visibility, personal branding photography is likely the better fit.

Neither is better in absolute terms.

They serve different purposes.

Personal branding and headshots in Johannesburg

All of my headshots and personal branding portraits are photographed in my Johannesburg studio, where lighting, composition, and direction are carefully controlled.

The process is calm, guided, and intentional.

Whether you need a single professional portrait or a more strategic body of work, the aim remains the same: to create portraits that feel credible, refined, and aligned with how you need to be seen.
