I have been photographing people in Johannesburg since 2005.
Some come because they need a photograph for work.
Some come with their family, their children, their parents or their pets.
Some come because they want a portrait of themselves.
The reason may be different, but the way I work remains much the same: simple lighting, careful direction and photographs in which the person matters more than everything around them.
My portrait sessions take place in my Johannesburg studio in Blairgowrie, Randburg.

What happens in my studio
You do not need to know how to pose or what to do in front of the camera.
That is my job.
I guide you throughout — where to stand, what to do with your hands, how to turn your body and where to look. I watch the small details and make adjustments as we work.
There is no need to arrive knowing how to be photographed.
You simply need to arrive.
The way I photograph
I have worked with a single-light black-background approach since 2005.
It is deliberately simple.
I use controlled studio light, minimal props and very little that can date a photograph unnecessarily.
Black and white is an important part of my work, although I also photograph in colour.
I am interested in expression, gesture, shape and the small things that make one person unmistakably themselves.
The background does not need to tell the story.
The person already does.
After your session
You will see what we have made and choose the portraits you want to keep.
Your selected photographs are then individually finished by me.
Portraits can remain as finished digital photographs or be made as prints and other portrait finishes designed to live in your home.
