What to wear newborn photos

What to wear for newborn family photos

What you wear for a newborn portrait session matters, but not in the way most people think.

The goal is not to create a styled look that competes with the baby. It is to keep the clothing simple, timeless, and emotionally quiet so the focus stays where it belongs — on your newborn and the connection within your family.

In my Johannesburg studio, I photograph newborns with a minimalist approach. That means clothing is chosen to support the portrait, not dominate it.

Keep it simple

The most timeless newborn portraits are usually the simplest.

For babies, that often means very little clothing at all — perhaps a plain white onesie, a soft neutral wrap, or nothing more than the baby’s natural form held safely and beautifully. I am drawn to simplicity because it allows the portrait to feel honest, sculptural, and free from trend-led styling.

What babies can wear

If you would like your baby to be lightly dressed, the best options are:

  • a plain white or neutral onesie

  • a soft knit romper in a simple tone

  • a lightly textured wrap or swaddle

  • something meaningful from your family or culture, if it fits the overall simplicity of the session

I avoid outfits that feel busy, novelty-driven, or overly decorative, because they can date a portrait very quickly.

What parents should wear

For parents, I usually recommend simple, timeless clothing in black, cream, grey, or other soft neutral tones.

Black works especially well in my studio and has become part of my signature approach. It keeps the portraits elegant and uncluttered, allowing your baby to remain the visual and emotional centre of the frame.

Clothing should feel comfortable, flattering, and free from loud logos, patterns, or trend-led details.

What siblings should wear

For siblings, the same principle applies: keep it simple.

Neutral tones, soft textures, and clothing without distracting prints work best. The aim is always harmony, so that the family feels visually connected without looking overly coordinated.

Skin-to-skin and feeding portraits

Some of the most moving newborn portraits involve very simple styling or almost none at all.

Skin-to-skin portraits, a baby resting against a parent’s chest, or a quiet feeding moment can create images that feel deeply human and timeless. In these portraits, what matters most is not the outfit, but the emotional truth of the moment.

Why simplicity works

Simple clothing keeps a portrait from dating.

Trends change. Tiny details that feel fashionable now can quickly place an image in a very specific year. But when the styling is minimal, the portraits hold their emotional power far longer.

That is why I always come back to simplicity, softness, and connection.

Dressing for timeless newborn portraits in Johannesburg

If you are preparing for a newborn portrait session, choose clothing that feels calm, comfortable, and understated. The less it asks for attention, the more space there is for the portrait to breathe.

In my Johannesburg studio, I guide families carefully so that what you wear supports the photographs rather than distracting from them.
