Model & Performer Portraits

Model & Performer Photographer Johannesburg

A portfolio session for models, actors and performers

You do not need to know how to pose.

You do not need to arrive with a collection of photographs you want to recreate.

And you do not need previous experience in front of the camera.

I photograph new and working models, actors and performers in my Johannesburg studio.

Some are building their first portfolio.

Others need to update an existing one.

My job is to work out what photographs you need and guide you through making them.

You do not need to arrive knowing what to do.

What happens in the studio

My studio is in Blairgowrie, Randburg.

Before your session, we will discuss whether the photographs are for modelling, acting, performance or a combination, and where you are in building your portfolio.

We will also talk about clothing and the kinds of photographs that will be useful.

During the session, I direct you throughout — posture, hands, expression, movement and where to look.

We work through one thing at a time.

There is time to change clothing, adjust something that is not working and try something differently.

Direction is my job, not yours.

Your first modelling portfolio

You do not need an enormous portfolio to begin.

A smaller group of strong photographs is more useful than a large collection of photographs that say the same thing.

If you are new to modelling, we begin simply.

That also gives you the chance to learn what happens in front of a camera — how small changes in posture affect the photograph, how to move without losing your position, and how expression changes what the camera sees.

Teenagers are welcome, with a parent or guardian present throughout the session.

Updating an existing portfolio

If you already have a portfolio, bring it with you or send it to me before the session.

We do not need to remake photographs you already have.

Instead, we can look at what is missing, what is dated and what would be useful to add.

Changes in your hair, age, appearance or the kind of work you are pursuing may also mean that photographs which once represented you no longer do.

Sometimes a portfolio needs editing as much as it needs new photographs.

What to wear

Clothing for a model or performer portfolio does not need to be elaborate or expensive.

Simple, well-fitting clothes usually photograph best.

Bring a small selection rather than your entire wardrobe. Black, white, denim and neutral colours are useful starting points, with additional pieces chosen according to the work we are making.

Avoid large logos, graphics and clothing that overwhelms you.

We will decide what to use as we work.
