Dance & Movement Portraits

Dance & Movement Photographer Johannesburg

You bring the movement. I photograph what is there.

You do not need to know how to perform for the camera.

You already know your body and your practice.

My job is to see the line, the gesture, the strength and the small details that can disappear in movement, and guide you towards the photograph.

I work with dancers, performers and people whose bodies have been shaped by practice — from ballet and contemporary dance to Pilates, martial arts and strength work.

Some sessions are photographed against my signature black background.

Others become part of Movement in Light, my high-key study of the body against white.

Sometimes we work with both.

The movement is yours. The photograph is mine.

What happens in the studio

Sessions take place in my studio in Blairgowrie, Randburg.

We begin simply.

I want to see how you move before deciding what we need to make.

You may arrive with particular movements or positions that matter to you. We can work with those, but we do not need a fixed sequence of photographs before we begin.

I direct throughout — looking at posture, extension, hands, feet, expression and where the movement sits within the frame.

Sometimes that means repeating something several times.

Sometimes the photograph happens in stillness.

Movement does not have to be large to be powerful.

Dance & Movement or Movement in Light

My Dance & Movement portraits are usually photographed against black, using sculpted light to define the body.

They can be strong, graphic and very still, or capture movement at the fraction of a second when line and gesture come together.

Movement in Light works differently.

Photographed against white, it uses light, shadow and space to create a different study of the body.

You do not need to choose between them before you enquire.

We can decide what suits you and the photographs you want to make.

What to bring

Bring clothing that allows me to see the body and the movement clearly.

Simple, well-fitting dance or movement wear usually works best. Black, white and neutral colours are useful starting points.

Depending on your practice, you may also want to bring:

  • Relevant footwear
  • A second clothing option
  • A simple piece of fabric or clothing that moves well
  • Small equipment or props specific to your discipline

Avoid large logos, busy patterns and anything that restricts the movement we want to photograph.

You do not need a suitcase full of clothes.

The body should remain more important than the clothes.

Preparing for your session

Movement sessions can be physically demanding.

Arrive rested and hydrated, and warm up before your session where possible.

We work within what your body can safely do on the day. There is no reason to push through pain or attempt something simply because we are making a photograph.

If you are working around an injury or physical limitation, tell me beforehand so I can take it into account.

The photograph is never more important than your body.

Hair and makeup

Hair should work with the kind of movement we are photographing.

Sometimes tied-back hair gives us the cleanest line. Sometimes loose hair becomes part of the movement itself.

Makeup is optional.

If you wear it, I suggest keeping it simple unless the photographs call for something more specific.

Professional makeup can also be arranged before your session.

Your dance & movement session

The session fee is R3,000.

The session fee covers the photography session, preparation beforehand, my direction throughout and the preparation of your photographs for selection.

When you book, you choose and pay for one of three portrait collections together with your session fee.

After the session, you can add additional portraits if there are more you would like to keep.
