Babyhood begins when the newborn stillness starts giving way to something else.
More expression.
More movement.
More curiosity.
And increasingly, a little person you recognise.
Baby portrait sessions take place in my Johannesburg studio and are built around the stage your baby is in when they arrive.
There is time to settle, play, feed, change direction and pause when needed.
Nothing needs to happen on cue.
Your baby does not need to perform for the camera.
When to book
There is no single correct age for baby portraits.
I think more in terms of stage than months.
Your baby may be watching intently, reaching, laughing, sitting with support or beginning to move independently.
Some babies are serious and observant.
Others arrive ready to investigate absolutely everything.
Both photograph beautifully.

What happens during the session
Before your session, we discuss who will be photographed and what everyone will wear.
On the day, I work with your baby rather than expecting your baby to work with me.
There is time for changes in mood, movement, distraction, feeding and whatever else a small person decides we need to accommodate.
Your session can include:
- your baby on their own
- mother and baby
- father and baby
- both parents with their baby
- brothers and sisters
- your family together
We do not need to make every combination.
We make the photographs that matter to your family.
The baby remains at the centre.
How I photograph babies
I use clean studio lighting, very few props and little decoration.
A baby already gives us plenty to photograph.
Expression.
Movement.
Hands and feet.
Curiosity.
The way they look at you.
The way they look at me.
The way an entirely ordinary object can suddenly require their complete attention.
I guide where needed, but much of photographing babies is watching carefully and being ready.
The portrait often happens in the fraction of a second when personality appears.
Not simply how your baby looked, but who they were becoming.
Including parents
Parents are very welcome in baby portraits.
You do not need to decide that every photograph must include you, but I encourage you to make at least some together.
Holding your baby gives scale to how small they still are.
It also records something your baby cannot remember for themselves: the way they fitted against you, reached for you and looked at you.
These photographs change as the years pass.

What to wear
Simple clothing works best.
There is no need to buy something especially for the session.
For your baby, plain clothing without large logos, graphics or distracting patterns keeps the attention on them. Bare feet and legs can photograph beautifully too.
For parents and siblings, I often suggest starting with black. Other simple neutral clothing works well.
Coordinate rather than match, and check clothing beforehand for worn, frayed or pilled fabric.

Your baby portrait session
The session fee is R3,000.
The session fee covers the photography session, preparation beforehand, my direction throughout and the creation of your portrait gallery.
Your finished portraits are purchased separately through one of three collections.
Baby portrait collections
Foundation — 10 portraits
R7,500
Total investment including session fee: R10,500
For those who want a small, strong group of finished portraits.
Signature — 15 portraits
R10,500
Total investment including session fee: R13,500
For those who want more variety and greater choice across the session.
Legacy — 25 portraits
R15,500
Total investment including session fee: R18,500
For those who want the broadest record of their baby and the relationships photographed.
Additional portraits are R1,500 each.
A black-and-white alternate version of a purchased portrait is R1,000 per portrait.
RAW and unedited files are not supplied.
You choose how much you want to keep.
After your session
After the session, you choose the photographs you would like me to finish.
Your selected portraits are individually retouched and delivered as finished digital files.
Framed portraits, wall pieces and albums are also available if you would like your photographs in print.

I have photographed babies and families in my Johannesburg studio since 2005.
When you book a baby portrait session with me, I photograph it personally.
Babies do not need to sit perfectly, smile on command or remain interested in what I am doing.
My job is to work with the baby who arrives.
Quiet or exuberant.
Still or constantly moving.
Serious or delighted by everything.
They only need to be themselves.

Frequently asked questions
Movement is part of babyhood and part of the session. I work with what your baby is doing rather than expecting them to stay in one position.
A serious, curious or thoughtful expression can make a wonderful portrait. I am interested in your baby's personality, not producing a smile on command.
Plain clothing in black, neutrals or other quiet tones photographs well. Avoid large logos, graphics and busy patterns.
I prefer to keep the frame simple so that your baby remains the most important thing in the photograph.
