What to Wear for Headshots

What to Wear for Your Headshots

When preparing for your professional headshot, your outfit should project competence, professionalism, and approachability. The goal is to keep the focus on you—your face, your expression, and your presence.

Professional Outfit Guidelines for Men and Women

For Men

  • Suit: Choose a well-fitted, classic suit in neutral colours such as dark navy, charcoal, dark grey, or black. Ensure no buttons are missing.

  • Shirt: A crisp, white or light-coloured button-up works best. Light blue is a flattering option; black with a black or charcoal suit works. Fine checks are acceptable. If your shirts look tired, invest in a new one.

  • Tie: If you wear a tie, keep it simple. Solid colours or subtle patterns are best—avoid novelty ties.

  • Grooming: Keep hair neat and freshly styled. Beards should be trimmed, or opt for a clean shave. Nails must be clean and neat.

For Women

  • Suit or Blazer: A fitted blazer or suit jacket in a neutral colour (black, charcoal, or navy) paired with trousers or a skirt creates a polished look.

  • Blouse: Choose a simple blouse in a light or neutral tone. Avoid bold colours or busy patterns. Long or three-quarter sleeves are ideal if you prefer to cover your arms.

  • Accessories: Keep jewellery minimal—stud earrings or a delicate necklace work best. Avoid anything distracting.

  • Grooming: Style your hair as you usually wear it. Opt for natural makeup that enhances without overpowering. Nails should be clean and in neutral shades.

Tips to Ensure You Look Confident and Polished on Camera

Fit & Comfort

Clothes should fit well and make you feel confident. Avoid anything too loose or tight.

Simplicity

Less is more. Classic and simple outfits keep attention on your face.

Colours & Layers

Neutrals are timeless. Black-on-black or white-on-white with the same coloured background can be very powerful. Layers work well, but keep lighter tones underneath darker ones.

Finishing Touches

  • Avoid logos or branded clothing unless it’s a company requirement.

  • Bring your wardrobe on hangers and change at the studio. Don’t travel in what you’ll be photographed in—this prevents wrinkles and keeps your look polished.

  • Glasses should be clean and ideally have non-reflective lenses.

Final Thoughts on Dressing for Your Headshot

Following these guidelines ensures your headshot presents you as credible, confident, and approachable—ready to make the right impression.

The next step is finding the right headshot photographer.
