Baby photography in Johannesburg
Fine art baby portraits shaped by personality, presence, and connection
Babyhood is different from the newborn days.
It is no longer only about arrival. It is about emergence.
A baby begins to look back, reach forward, laugh, cling, study, and reveal something unmistakably individual. This portfolio is a reflection of that stage as I see it — not as a milestone to be rushed through, but as a brief and remarkable season of becoming.
Since 2005, I have photographed babies in my Johannesburg studio with the same quiet, deliberate approach that shapes all of my portrait work. Light is kept simple. The frame is uncluttered. Expression, form, and connection are allowed to lead.
This is not baby photography built around props, novelty, or distraction. It is portraiture that pays attention to gesture, gaze, softness, curiosity, and the early signs of personality beginning to come into view.
This portfolio sits between the tenderness of newborn portraiture and the growing independence of family and child portraits. It is a stage with its own language — one of movement, wonder, closeness, and change.
Some of these portraits are of babies alone. Some include the presence of a parent. In each case, the baby remains at the centre.
The baby portraits in this collection hold many different qualities. Some are playful. Some are watchful. Some are deeply still. Together, they reflect what I value most in portraiture: honesty, emotional presence, and images that feel alive long after the moment itself has passed.
These are baby portraits photographed with restraint, intention, and respect for how quickly this season moves.
They are not only about how a baby looked.
They are about who your baby was becoming.
Talented, patient, creative, not to mention the nicest person ever. We have been visiting Bridget Corke for over seven years; we ensure that a family photoshoot is always scheduled in South Africa. Bridget has created an incredible family then and now album. I can’t say enough great things about this photographer. Jerome Glicksman
