Animals move quietly through the fabric of our lives, yet the place they hold is immense.
In my Johannesburg studio, I photograph dogs and cats — sometimes alone, sometimes with the people whose lives they share.
Photographing them is not about performance.
It is about noticing.
The tilt of a head.
The softness of a gaze.
The familiar way they settle beside the people they trust.
For over two decades, I have photographed beloved companions — sometimes alone, sometimes with the people whose lives they share.
Some portraits are playful.
Others are quiet.
All begin with the animal in front of me.
Because anyone who has loved one knows: they are never just a pet.
Every animal has a way of being entirely their own.
The serious one.
The clown.
The old soul.
The dog who cannot sit still.
The cat who will decide whether any of this is happening at all.
They do not need to perform for me.
I watch, wait and work with what they give me.
Often, the photograph that matters is not the perfectly behaved one.
It is the one that looks unmistakably like them.
Some of my favourite pet portraits have a person in them.
A hand on a head.
A dog leaning into someone they have known for years.
The ridiculous things that happen when nobody is quite doing what they were supposed to do.
These are ordinary things while we are living them.
Years later, they may not feel ordinary at all.
Sometimes the portrait is of the animal. Sometimes it is of the relationship.
Families often share what these portraits come to mean over time.
