Newborn photography in Johannesburg

Timeless newborn portraits rooted in truth, tenderness, and the golden thread of family

The first days with a new baby are made of Stolen Moments™.

A hand curled around a finger. The weight of a sleeping child against a parent’s chest. The quiet astonishment of new life entering a family and changing it forever.

This newborn portfolio is a reflection of those early days as I see them — not styled for trend, but photographed for truth. Since 2005, I have created newborn portraits in my Johannesburg studio with a quiet, minimalist approach that allows emotion, form, and connection to lead.

These are not portraits built around props or excess. They are studies in presence — honest, artful photographs of a baby being held, loved, and welcomed into the golden thread of family.

If you would like to understand the thinking behind this work, you can read more about my Natural newborn poses with parents, What to wear for newborn photos, and The beauty of unwrapped newborn portraits.

The way I photograph newborns

My approach is simple.

I am drawn to what is real: the softness of newborn skin, the sculptural beauty of a tiny body, the way light falls across a sleeping face, and the instinctive way parents hold their child. I often photograph babies with minimal styling rather than wraps or heavy props, because simplicity allows the portrait to breathe and keeps the focus where it belongs.

In this stripped-back space, the smallest gestures become everything.

A newborn portrait does not need embellishment to be powerful. It needs care, restraint, and the ability to recognise the moment when feeling reveals itself.

Family is part of the story

For me, newborn photography has never been only about the baby in isolation.

It is also about the people gathered around that new life — the mother, the father, the sibling leaning in, the grandparent seeing a new generation in their arms. These relationships are part of what makes the work endure.

That is why family connection is woven naturally into my newborn sessions. It gives context, warmth, and emotional depth to the chapter. It shows not only who arrived, but what changed when they did.

A timeless visual language

My newborn work is guided by light, form, and emotional truth.

Black and white often strips the portrait back to its essence, allowing shape and connection to take centre stage. Colour, when used, is quiet and deliberate. Across both, the aim is the same: to create portraits that feel timeless rather than fashionable.

No gimmicks. No clutter. No trend-led styling.

Just new life, honestly seen.

Stolen Moments™, held with care

The newborn stage passes with astonishing speed.

What feels all-consuming in the moment will one day feel impossibly far away. That is why these portraits matter. They hold the details that memory cannot always keep — the scale, the softness, the stillness, the way your family looked at the very beginning of this new chapter.

These are the Stolen Moments™ that become part of your family’s visual legacy over time.

Continue the story

Newborn portraiture is one chapter in a larger story of family, change, and connection.
