Then & Now

Then & Now portraits in Johannesburg

A portrait of what time has carried

There was a time
when they fit in your arms

Now they stand beside you

And somewhere between those two moments
a life unfolded

These portraits are not about childhood
and they are not about adulthood

They are about what remains
when time has moved forward

The experience

This is a quiet, guided studio portrait experience in Johannesburg.

There is no performance.
No expectation to “get it right.”

You are gently directed —
how to stand
where to place your hands
how to connect without forcing anything

The pace is calm.
The space is considered.

What unfolds is not posed in the traditional sense.
It is recognised.

And then shaped with light.

Why this matters

There are very few moments in life
where you stand side by side
with the person who once depended on you for everything

And realise
they no longer do

This is not a loss

It is a transformation

And it deserves to be seen

These portraits hold something most photographs miss

Not how your child looked
but what your relationship became

Portraits made with time

You are welcome to bring an earlier photograph

Not to recreate it exactly
but to stand beside it

To acknowledge the distance between those two moments
and everything that lives inside it

Some choose to create a paired portrait
Others allow the present moment to stand on its own

Both are equally powerful

Who this is for

For parents and their children
For families across time

For those who understand
that photographs are not only about now

They are about continuity
memory
and presence

Many begin this work as mothers
Others arrive as fathers
Some come as families

For those who feel
that something has shifted
even if they cannot name it

These portraits often become part of something larger:
an album that holds both where you began
and where you are now

Investment

Your session is a considered, fully guided studio experience.

Session fee: R3000

This includes:

  • Your studio session in Johannesburg
  • Creative direction and expert posing
  • Access to the studio wardrobe
  • A private viewing and selection appointment

Portraits are purchased separately
through a choice of collections:

Foundation — a simple beginning
Presence — a deeper reflection
Legacy — a complete body of work

Many clients choose to create an album
to hold both the past and the present

These become part of your family’s visual history

FAQs

No. It is optional. The present moment is enough.
Simple, coordinated clothing works best.
Black is always recommended to keep the focus on connection.
This work becomes more powerful with time.
Adult children often bring a depth that cannot be directed.
Completely.
You do not need to know what to do.

There are photographs that show how someone looked

And then there are photographs
that hold what was lived
