I have photographed women for more than two decades.
My nude portrait work is made in my Johannesburg studio using simple lighting, a black background and very little else.
There are no elaborate sets or themes.
The body, the light and the portrait are enough.
Some photographs reveal very little.
Others reveal more.
What matters is not how much is shown, but the portrait itself.
Nothing needs to be added.
Nude portraiture changes when almost everything else is removed from the frame.
A shoulder.
The curve of a back.
Hands.
A face disappearing into shadow.
The shape of a body against black.
I use light to decide what is seen and what is allowed to disappear.
The photographs can be quiet, strong, vulnerable, sculptural or almost abstract.
They do not need to say the same thing.
The body gives the light somewhere to fall.
There is no particular age or body you need to have for this work.
They do not need to lose weight first.
They do not need to become more confident.
They do not need to know how to pose.
Bodies change because lives do.
A portrait keeps one of them.
This is what I looked like then.
Nude portrait sessions take place privately in my Blairgowrie studio and are photographed only by me.
